Kobbie Mainoo or Casemiro: Who Will Make Way After Manchester United's Signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG?

Manchester United is on the verge of finalizing a deal that has been in the works for much of the summer transfer window, the signing of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

After extensive negotiations, the Red Devils have reportedly agreed to a fee of approximately £50.7 million, including add-ons, with the Ligue 1 side.

The signing of Ugarte addresses a critical need for Manchester United, particularly in shoring up a midfield that has often left the backline exposed under manager Erik ten Hag.

Despite trying various combinations in midfield, United's vulnerability in this area was a key factor in their disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Casemiro or Kobbie Mainoo - Who will partner Manuel Ugarte in midfield?

In recent matches, Ten Hag has favored a double pivot of veteran Casemiro and rising star Kobbie Mainoo. While Mainoo has shown immense promise, injuries and the physical demands of the Premier League have highlighted the limitations of relying on the 32-year-old Casemiro as a full-time starter.

This has left United searching for a more dynamic option to anchor the midfield, leading to the pursuit of Ugarte.

With Ugarte's arrival, the dynamics of United's midfield are set to change. The 23-year-old Uruguayan is known for his tenacity, defensive acumen, and ability to cover large areas of the pitch.

His presence could provide the stability and energy that have been missing, allowing the team to better protect their backline.

However, Ugarte's inclusion in the starting lineup raises questions about who will partner him in midfield. One possibility is that Ten Hag will pair Ugarte with 19-year-old Mainoo, who has shown an ability to operate in a more advanced role.

Mainoo's versatility and box-to-box capabilities could complement Ugarte's more defensive style, creating a balanced midfield duo.

On the other hand, Casemiro, despite his vast experience and quality, may find himself in a reduced role. At 32, the Brazilian midfielder may no longer have the legs to consistently play full matches in the demanding Premier League.

Ugarte's arrival could see Casemiro acting as an understudy, stepping in when rotation is needed or when additional experience is required in high-stakes matches.

While it is possible that Ten Hag could experiment with a midfield trio featuring both Ugarte and Casemiro, such a setup seems less likely given the need for mobility and energy in the center of the pitch.

Ugarte is expected to be available for selection as early as United's upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool.
