Champions League: PSG Must Not Relax Despite Chelsea Lead

Paris Saint-Germain, led by Luis Enrique, must stay vigilant after a 5-2 first leg victory over Chelsea. Despite a comfortable advantage, the head coach warns that the Champions League requires constant focus and resilience, as English opponents can seize momentum and alter outcomes in the knockout stage.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has urged the squad to stay alert before the Champions League last-16 second leg against Chelsea, despite holding a 5-2 first-leg lead, stressing that a three-goal cushion can quickly disappear in Europe’s elite competition against opponents of similar quality.

The reigning European champions had to work hard in the first meeting in Paris, and Luis Enrique repeatedly highlighted the danger of easing off mentally, noting Chelsea’s ability to create chances and the difficulty of fully controlling any Champions League knockout tie across two legs.

PSG Must Not Relax in Champions League

Speaking ahead of the return match, Luis Enrique underlined that experience on the touchline does not remove pressure, saying: "Playing and managing these matches is always different. For us, as a team andreigning champions, we try to focus on the important things anddetails, because that's always important when you play against a team of the same level. We have an advantage, but we know it can disappear in an instant. In the Champions League, it's impossible [to relax]. Chelsea will have the ability to create chances, but it's impossible to let your guard down in the Champions League. You have to be able to take advantage of moments of suffering to change the momentum. These are matches impossible to control. It's likely to bedifferent from the first leg."

Under Luis Enrique, PSG have produced strong numbers in the Champions League knockout rounds, winning 12 of 18 such matches for a success rate of 66.7%, and the Opta supercomputer gives the French club a 94% probability of advancing to the quarter-finals after running its tournament simulations.

Recent Champions League campaigns have seen PSG handle Premier League opposition effectively, with the club currently unbeaten in five consecutive fixtures against English teams in the competition, registering four victories and one draw, and now targeting a sixth straight match without defeat against clubs from England for the first time.

That run has also brought progress in knockout ties against English sides, as PSG seek to move through a fourth straight Champions League knockout round against Premier League opponents, having previously eliminated Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal during last season’s successful campaign.

Reflecting on this sequence, Luis Enrique referred to previous comments that gained wide attention, stating: "My joke about winning against the Premier League teams follows me everywhere. It's a pleasure to play against English clubs because it's the top level. Last year we played against almost all the English clubs, and it's almost the same this year. But it was a joke, we respect everyone."

Champions League first-leg drama against Chelsea

The first leg against Chelsea at Parc des Princes had been finely balanced for most of the contest, with the score locked at 2-2 entering the closing stages before substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia changed the momentum with a decisive cameo during the final 16 minutes.

Kvaratskhelia first created PSG’s third goal by setting up Vitinha to restore the hosts’ lead for the third time in the match, and the Georgian then completed the job with two late strikes, turning a tense encounter into a 5-2 success that gave the French champions a three-goal edge in the aggregate score.

That margin placed PSG in select company within French football history, marking the sixth time a club from France had won a two-legged Champions League knockout tie by at least three goals in the first game, with four of the previous five teams in that situation going on to progress.

The upcoming second leg at Stamford Bridge is framed by those numbers and trends, yet Luis Enrique continues to stress focus on details and emotional control, knowing Chelsea’s threat and the unpredictable nature of Champions League knockout football mean PSG must handle difficult spells to convert their strong position into another quarter-final place.

Overall, PSG enter the second leg with a clear aggregate lead, strong Champions League knockout form and a positive record against Premier League teams, yet Luis Enrique’s repeated reminders about focus and the risk of momentum shifts show the staff are treating Chelsea’s challenge with caution rather than comfort.
