PSG Title Race Tightens As Lyon Defeat Fuels Lens Challenge In Ligue 1
Paris Saint-Germain slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Lyon in Ligue 1, yet Luis Enrique stressed the loss also kept the title race alive for supporters. The result prevented PSG from extending the lead over Lens, leaving the defending champions with work still to do.
The match followed PSG’s qualification for the Champions League semi-finals, but that momentum did not carry over. Despite heavy pressure and a late goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 94th minute, the effort counted only as consolation after earlier Lyon damage.

Defeat left PSG with five losses from 28 Ligue 1 games in the 2025-26 season. That figure is their second-highest at this stage under Qatar Sports Investments, behind 2020-21 with six defeats, and it matches the 2012-13 campaign, when PSG still finished as champions.
Even with this setback, data models continue to back PSG strongly. The Opta supercomputer gives PSG a 95.4% chance of securing a fifth successive Ligue 1 crown. Lens, the closest challengers, hold a 4.6% probability, keeping the race mathematically open heading into the run-in.
PSG still have a game in hand and must also face Pierre Sage’s Lyon side again on 13 May. Luis Enrique did not appear alarmed by the reduced advantage, seeing value in a close contest and stressing that Lens’ form ensures a demanding title chase until the final round.
Asked if the shrinking gap was negative for PSG, Luis Enrique replied: "I don't know, it's just the way it is," Luis Enrique said when asked if it was bad news that their gap at the top was just a point. "Did you want a more competitive Championship? You have it. Lens is having a very good season, and it will be difficult until the last match."
PSG Ligue 1 title race statistics and missed chances
On the pitch, PSG produced far more efforts than Lyon but lacked efficiency. PSG recorded 22 shots and an expected goals (xG) value of 2.88. Lyon attempted six shots, reached 0.7 xG, and still emerged with victory after taking early opportunities.
Most of PSG’s xG came from Goncalo Ramos’ penalty following a foul by Ainsley Maitland-Niles on Lucas Hernandez. Ramos could not convert, continuing a poor season for PSG from 12 yards. Across all competitions in 2025-26, PSG have missed six of 12 penalties, the highest total among major European clubs.

Those missed chances added to Lyon’s fast start, which featured first-half goals from Endrick and Afonso Moreira. Falling two behind so swiftly meant PSG chased the game from the early stages. The late strike from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia reduced the deficit but arrived too late to influence the result.
Reflecting on the performance, Luis Enrique highlighted both the early setbacks and the wasted opportunities in attack. The coach underlined how conceding twice so quickly changed the pattern of the match, forcing PSG to attack constantly while Lyon protected the advantage with disciplined defending.
Asked to give an overall verdict, Luis Enrique said: "It's very easy to analyse. When you start a game like that, you try to dominate and control, but you concede two goals on the first two chances," Luis Enrique added. "At that moment, we understood that it would be complicated. We hit 23 times, but we only scored on the last one. We missed another penalty. That made the difference. We tried to change this dynamic, but we didn't succeed. Lyon played a high-level match, they have quality players and a coach. We have to accept it, we'll wait for the next match, we now play every three days. We have to give minutes to a lot of players because we are going to play a lot."
PSG now move quickly to the next fixtures, including a meeting with Nantes on 22 April and the upcoming clash with Lyon in May. The squad must rotate regularly due to matches every three days, while the Ligue 1 title race with Lens remains mathematically alive but still tilted towards PSG.
