Can Zidane's men seal quarterfinal berth in Paris?

This match was supposed to be the stage where Neymar could challenge the Messi-Ronaldo domination and stake his claim for the Ballon d’Or before the World Cup began.

Bengaluru, March 6: When Real Madrid take on Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Paris for the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, it is safe to say that no one would have thought of this outcome.

This match was supposed to be the stage where Neymar could challenge the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo domination and stake his claim for the Ballon d’Or before the World Cup began.

However, it has turned into an anti-climax, the man who he was supposed to challenge has turned the game around for Real and Neymar has not only been ineffective in the first leg, but unavailable due to injury.

Neymar’s absence

Neymar’s absence

Very few would wager a bet on PSG winning even if they have home advantage. That is because Real have been at the top of their game when it really mattered, even if they have been a bit sloppy in La Liga.

They also have a healthy two-goal lead and have enjoyed a recent upturn in form. That being said one should not write off PSG completely, especially with the kind of players they have at their disposal even if Neymar is unavailable.

Cavani the key

Cavani the key

PSG will rely heavily on Edinson Cavani, he has always tried to show Neymar who the real prince of Paris is and this will be the right time for him to prove the same.

Cavani has been fighting all season to be PSG's top dog and helping them overcome Real will definitely get him the respect he deserves. Apart from Cavani, there are others at PSG waiting to prove themselves.

Angel Di Maria and Julian Draxler have largely been part time players thanks to the Brazilian, this will be the right time for them to prove that PSG need not be worried about a lack of firepower.

Mbappe factor

Mbappe factor

Then there is the curious case of Kylian Mbappe, the man who lit the Champions League last season, has been very quiet this time. He is another person with a lot to prove.

Mbappe was forced off with an ankle problem when PSG defeated Marseille in a Coupe de France clash. But he has been cleared for the Real tie.

Solid midfield

Regardless of PSG's firepower Real will be quietly confident. They have a solid midfield with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro who will be more than a match for Adrien Rabiot, Javier Pastore and Marco Verrati.

The biggest problem for PSG is that they are bottlers. They have been known to crumble when playing the big teams and the fact that they hired Unai Emery to get them past teams like Real adds a lot of pressure on him. This is Emery's last chance and a slip up on Tuesday will see his job being on the line soon.
