Punjab FC and Gokulam Kerala are playing for pride as they face off in a Group C Round cdead rubber in the Super Cup India, known as Kalinga Super Cup for sponsorship reasons, at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday (January 21).
Both the clubs are already out of the semifinal run with the evening clash between Chennaiyin FC and table toppers Mumbai City will decide the group winner. East Bengal and Jamshedpur FC have already qualified for semis from the other groups.
Newly-promoted ISL side Punjab FC started the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 with a 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin before falling to a late defeat to Mumbai City FC 3-2 in the second round of group stages. The Chandigarh-based outfit will mainly look to gain some winning momentum before heading back to top-tier football as the club is looking to climb out of the bottom two of the table.
The side's fortune has been more or less similar to their outcomes in ISL, where they often lost matches after taking the lead. The inexperience of playing in the top league showed as the defense often crumbled under pressure.
For Gokulam Kerala, it has been a discolour season too as they are 10 points off the top of the table in the I-League at the fifth place. They have also failed to pick any point in the Kalinga Super Cup, including a dramatic 2-1 loss to Mumbai City FC after taking a 1-0 lead. However, they suffered a 2-0 loss to Chennaiyin FC in the second game to go out of the title run.
The likes of Alex Sanchez, Aminou Bouba and Nikola Stojanovic have failed to make telling impacts while talented players such as Sreekuttan VS and Noufal P have a slump in form. Young Nigerian winger Emmanuel Justine has also failed to live up to the expectations since coming on loan from Kerala Blasters.
