Italy Coach Luciano Spalletti States Quality Isn't Enough Without Confidence After Defeat To Norway

Following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Norway, Italy's coach Luciano Spalletti emphasised that quality alone cannot secure success without confidence. The Azzurri face challenges in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Italy's national football team is facing a challenging period after a 3-0 loss to Norway in their World Cup qualifying match. This defeat has raised concerns for coach Luciano Spalletti, who acknowledged that the team's quality alone isn't sufficient without confidence. The Azzurri struggled in Oslo, conceding three goals in the first half, with Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa, and Erling Haaland scoring for Norway.

The Italian team has not qualified for the last two World Cup tournaments and now faces an uphill battle in Group I. Norway leads the group by nine points, although they have played two more matches than Italy. With only the top team from each group securing direct qualification for the finals in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Italy's path is becoming increasingly difficult.

Spalletti: Quality Lacks Without Confidence

Spalletti expressed his concerns about the team's performance during a post-match interview with RAI Sport. "We conceded a first goal that was avoidable," he said. "Then in the open spaces, they had a couple of individual moves that caused us problems." He noted that after falling behind 2-0, Norway's defensive strategy made it hard for Italy to find opportunities.

Spalletti admitted that improvements are necessary to prevent giving opponents easy advantages. He emphasised that while individual talent exists within the squad, confidence is lacking. "I am the head of this group," Spalletti stated. "We need to improve in certain aspects because we cannot give advantages to opponents by gifting the ball."

The coach also mentioned his commitment to this group of players despite current challenges. He plans to discuss future strategies with the president of FIGC to align on decisions moving forward. Spalletti highlighted that maintaining an offside trap and chasing down opponents are areas needing attention.

Addressing Performance Concerns

The Italian coach acknowledged that after such performances, it's crucial to identify and address underlying issues. "There are always worries," he said. "After a performance like that, you clearly have to ask yourself questions and realise there are problems." Despite these challenges, Spalletti remains determined to face them head-on as there are no alternatives.

Italy's journey towards World Cup qualification remains uncertain as they navigate these difficulties. The focus will be on rebuilding confidence and refining tactics to enhance their chances in upcoming matches.
