'I Miss Playing For England,' Raheem Sterling Shares His Eagerness To Return

Raheem Sterling discusses his absence from the England team and expresses a strong desire to wear the national jersey again. Having missed recent squads, he remains hopeful of a comeback.

Raheem Sterling has expressed that playing for England is one of the most rewarding experiences, admitting he misses representing his national team. The winger last appeared for England during the 2022 World Cup, where they were defeated 2-1 by France in the quarter-finals. Since then, he has not been included in the last seven squads, including the Euro 2024 team that reached another European Championship final.

Sterling, who debuted for England in 2012 and has earned 82 caps, is eager to return to the national squad. "Of course [I miss it], I love playing for England. It is one of the best feelings you can ever have," Sterling said. "To see the boys out there brought me joy. To be honest, they were the only games I watched - the England ones. I love playing for England. I am looking forward to getting back in the England set-up, that is for sure."

Sterling Yearns for England Return

Earlier this year, then-manager Gareth Southgate informed Sterling that he needed to improve his performance at Chelsea to regain his place in the national team. Chelsea's underperformance over the past two seasons since Sterling joined from Manchester City was a significant factor.

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, Sterling participated in all five pre-season friendlies, scoring once and assisting once. He believes Maresca will play a crucial role in helping him return to top form. "[Maresca can get the] best out of me, the best out of the team," Sterling added. "He has come in and stamped his authority, the way he wants to play."

Gareth Southgate resigned after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Under-21 boss Lee Carsley is expected to lead the team for upcoming Nations League matches in September as no permanent successor has been appointed yet.

Sterling remains optimistic about Chelsea's future under Maresca despite some unsatisfactory results early on. "Yes, some of the results haven't been pleasing but, with the ball, the right information is getting passed on," he said. "You can see the patterns coming through. It is early days so you can see where we're looking to go."

The Premier League season is approaching quickly, and Sterling believes better times are ahead for both himself and Chelsea. "It is a learning process for the whole group and one we are grasping really quickly," he noted.

Back at base.

Sterling's determination to return to international football remains strong as he continues working hard at Chelsea under Maresca's guidance.
