Lyon Dominates Rangers 4-1 With Lacazette And Fofana Each Scoring Twice In Europa League Match

In a commanding performance, Lyon defeated Rangers 4-1 in the Europa League. Alexandre Lacazette and Malick Fofana each scored twice, showcasing Lyon's attacking prowess at Ibrox.

Lyon secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League at Ibrox, with Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette each netting twice. Lacazette, a former Arsenal player, scored both his goals before halftime. Tom Lawrence had initially equalised for Rangers after Fofana's early goal. Fofana added another in the second half, sealing Lyon's dominance.

Rayan Cherki played a pivotal role for Lyon, assisting both of Fofana's goals. His performance was instrumental as he now boasts six goal involvements in just five Europa League starts. This includes three goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Lacazette marked his 50th Europa League appearance by scoring his 23rd and 24th goals in the competition.

Lyon Outclasses Rangers 4-1 in Europa League

Rangers struggled to contain Lyon's attacking prowess. Despite their previous win against Malmo, they found no answers to Lyon's dynamic play. This defeat marked the first time Rangers conceded four goals at home in the Europa League or UEFA Cup.

Fofana opened the scoring after capitalising on Rayan Cherki's shot that rebounded off the post. Lawrence quickly levelled for Rangers after Cyriel Dessers' attempt was blocked. However, an error from Connor Barron allowed Fofana to set up Lacazette for an easy finish, putting Lyon ahead again.

Lacazette extended Lyon's lead with a stunning 25-yard strike before halftime. Early in the second half, Fofana completed his brace by converting Cherki’s low cross at the back post. This performance highlighted Lyon's attacking depth and efficiency.

Missed Opportunities for Rangers

Rangers had their chances but failed to capitalise on them. Vaclav Cerny missed a crucial opportunity by shooting over the bar when well-placed to score. Duje Caleta-Car saw his header crash against the crossbar, while Corentin Tolisso had his shot cleared off the line.

This match was only the third time overall that Rangers have conceded four goals at home in European competitions. Substitute Said Benrahma also came close but was denied as Lyon continued to press forward relentlessly.

Lyon now sits second in their group with two wins from two matches, showcasing their strong start to this season’s Europa League campaign.
