Rangers have announced Russell Martin as their new head coach, signing him on a three-year contract. Martin, who previously managed Southampton, was chosen over Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti for the role. The 39-year-old replaces Philippe Clement, who was dismissed in February, with Barry Ferguson temporarily leading the team until the season's end.
Martin is no stranger to Rangers, having played 17 games on loan in 2018. His appointment follows a recent takeover by a US-based consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh, which includes the San Francisco 49ers' investment arm. One of their first significant decisions was bringing Martin back to Ibrox.

Assisting Martin will be Matt Gill, who has previously worked with him at Swansea City and Southampton. "We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Russell Martin as Head Coach of our men's first team on a three-year deal," stated Rangers Football Club via Twitter.
Martin expressed his excitement about returning to Rangers during an interview with the club's official website. "It is a privilege to be named head coach of Rangers Football Club at the beginning of this exciting new chapter," he said. He acknowledged the club's rich history and high expectations and aims to bring success back for fans and players alike.
He emphasised his commitment to setting high standards and working diligently to earn supporters' respect. "There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies, and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of," he added.
Martin's tenure at Southampton saw mixed results. He led them through 73 matches and secured promotion in the 2023-24 season. However, adapting to the Premier League proved challenging, with only one win from 16 games (D2 L13), resulting in his dismissal last December after conceding 36 goals.
Despite these challenges, Martin remains optimistic about building a competitive squad at Rangers. Preparations for pre-season are already underway as he looks forward to meeting players and forming a team that embodies bravery and aggression in crucial moments.
As Martin embarks on this new journey with Rangers, his focus remains on achieving success and instilling pride among fans through hard work and dedication.
