Rangers' manager, Russell Martin, expressed that his recent critique of the team after their 1-1 draw with Motherwell was rooted in care and concern. Rangers, who ended last season 17 points behind Celtic, began their new campaign at Fir Park with a disappointing result. Despite James Tavernier scoring early, Emmanuel Longelo's late goal led to boos from some fans.
Ahead of the Champions League qualifier against Viktoria Plzen, Martin stood by his comments. He emphasised that his feedback comes from a place of love and a desire to help the players improve. "I think if they know us by now as a group of coaching staff, that it all comes from a place of love, really, and care for them," Martin said. "I don't come out and say that because I want to be ruthless and all that stuff."

Martin's tenure began positively with Rangers defeating Panathinaikos in the previous qualifying round. They secured a 3-1 aggregate win, ensuring at least Europa League participation this season. However, Martin is keen on returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2022-23.
Plzen reached this stage after an impressive comeback against Servette, winning 3-2 on aggregate. The winner will face either RB Salzburg or Club Brugge in the play-offs. Martin acknowledged the challenge ahead: "The game is going to be tough. They are really powerful, really strong."
Martin highlighted Plzen's strengths and noted the need for Rangers to adapt their strategy at Ibrox. He stressed moving the ball quickly and being ready for a physical contest. "It's a really different test to the Panathinaikos one," he added.
Rangers' next match is crucial as they aim to secure their spot in Europe's top competition once again. The team must overcome Plzen's formidable style over two legs to advance further in their European journey.
Martin remains optimistic about his squad's potential despite recent setbacks. He believes in their ability to change ingrained behaviours and rise to challenges. His approach focuses on fostering honest conversations and encouraging players to push beyond their comfort zones.
As Rangers prepare for this pivotal match against Viktoria Plzen, Martin's leadership will be crucial in guiding them through this challenging phase of their European campaign.
