Ben Godfrey Signs For Rangers On Season-Long Loan From Atalanta

Rangers have secured defender Ben Godfrey on a season-long loan from Atalanta, with an option to buy next summer. The 28-year-old is set to anchor the Ibrox back line across the 2026-27 campaign, adding depth and proven top-flight experience.

The move comes as Rangers prepare for a demanding season, which begins on 31 July against Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership. The club will also enter Europa League qualifying after finishing third in the league, increasing the need for reliable defensive options.

Ben Godfrey joins Rangers on loan

Godfrey joined Atalanta in 2024 but has featured only five times for the Serie A side since leaving Everton. The Ibrox switch becomes Godfrey’s third loan spell during that period, following earlier short-term stays at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Brondby.

Despite limited minutes in Italy, Godfrey arrives with more than 100 Premier League appearances. The defender has not played in Scotland before, yet Rangers view that previous exposure in England and Europe as crucial preparation for domestic and continental targets in 2026-27.

Rangers retain an option to convert the agreement into a permanent transfer at the end of the season. That clause allows the club to judge Godfrey’s impact across league and European fixtures before deciding whether to commit long-term to the Atalanta defender.

New Rangers manager Derek McInnes has highlighted the signing as central to reshaping the squad for the coming year. McInnes wants greater resilience at the back, with Godfrey expected to compete immediately for a starting role in the defensive unit.

McInnes told the club website: "Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. Hes played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him."

Expanding on Godfrey’s attributes, McInnes added detail about how the defender should fit the Rangers style. "Hes a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. Were pleased to get him in, and Im looking forward to working with him in the season ahead."

Rangers Ben Godfrey signing: player reaction and ambitions

Godfrey expressed clear enthusiasm about the switch and the demands of representing Rangers. "I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I cant wait to get started."

The defender also outlined personal and team aims for the year. "I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times." Those targets align with Rangers’ drive to compete for domestic trophies and advance in Europe.

With competitive action approaching, Godfrey’s arrival offers McInnes another experienced option as Rangers balance league demands and Europa League qualifying. The loan structure, combined with the purchase option, gives the club flexibility while placing responsibility on Godfrey to secure a longer stay through performances.
