Rashford: I’d Stay At Barcelona If I Had A Magic Wand

Marcus Rashford struck a stunning free-kick in El Clasico as Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-0 to secure the LaLiga title again, yet the Manchester United loanee still faces an uncertain future. Rashford’s loan ends this summer and decisions over a permanent move remain unresolved.

Asked about staying at Camp Nou, Rashford gave a cautious answer but made clear where personal preference lies. Rashford told BBC Sport: "I don't know, I'm not a magician. If I was, I'd stay, so we'll see! I came here to win. I want to win as many things as I can and this is one more to add. This team is going to win so much in the future, too, so being part of that would be special."

Rashford: I’d Stay At Barcelona

Rashford is on loan from Manchester United for the 2025-26 campaign, and Hansi Flick’s staff are reported to favour a permanent deal. However, Rashford’s current salary at Old Trafford is understood to be a major obstacle, which could complicate negotiations between the clubs in the coming months.

The move from Old Trafford to Camp Nou has revived Rashford’s effectiveness in the final third. Across all competitions this season, Rashford has 14 goals and 11 assists in 47 matches for Barcelona. That contribution already beats his combined goals and assists in either of the previous two seasons.

Rashford recorded 13 direct goal involvements for Manchester United in 2023-24, then 19 in 2024-25 across two teams. That 2024-25 total included 10 for Manchester United and nine during a half-season spell with Aston Villa, underlining the step up achieved in Barcelona colours.

Season / Team Goals Assists Total Goal Involvements
2023-24 (Manchester United) - - 13
2024-25 (Manchester United + Aston Villa) - - 19 (10 United, 9 Villa)
2025-26 (Barcelona, all competitions) 14 11 25

Within Barcelona’s squad this season, Rashford’s attacking output sits just behind three teammates. Lamine Yamal has delivered 24 goals and 17 assists, Fermin Lopez has 13 goals and 17 assists, and Raphinha has produced 19 goals with seven assists, putting Rashford fourth for total goal involvements in 2025-26.

Rashford’s latest contribution came in one of Barcelona’s biggest fixtures. After only nine minutes against Real Madrid, Rashford whipped a free-kick into Thibaut Courtois’ top corner. Ferran Torres added an 18th-minute second, and Barcelona controlled the rest of the game without serious pressure on their lead.

The free-kick carried extra significance in club history. Rashford’s strike was only Barcelona’s third direct free-kick goal against Real Madrid in this century. The previous one also arrived in LaLiga, when Lionel Messi scored from a dead ball against Real Madrid in October 2012.

Rashford admitted the effort was not his first choice when he placed the ball. Rashford said: "I wasn't going to shoot, because when I didn't put the ball down I didn't see the angle, I didn't feel confident, so I was going to cross. But then everyone was telling me to shoot so I hyped myself up a little bit. It was good that I shot in the end! It was a good goal."

Data from OptaJose highlighted the scale of Barcelona’s recent league success. Since winning their first LaLiga title of this century in 2004-05, Barcelona have now put together runs of at least two straight titles on five separate occasions, collecting 13 championships in that period compared with Real Madrid’s nine.

Marcus Rashford Barcelona season run-in

Barcelona still have three league matches to complete their 2025-26 schedule. Flick’s team visit Alaves, host Real Betis next Sunday, then travel to Valencia. Those games offer Rashford further chances to add goals, strengthen his case for a permanent transfer, and add another trophy-chasing chapter to a revived season.

Rashford has stressed that personal targets align with Barcelona’s wider ambitions. Rashford said earlier the move was about competing for trophies, and the title win supports that aim. With the team already champions and still developing under Flick, Rashford’s next contract decision will shape the next stage of career and club plans.
