Rayo Vallecano Reach Conference League Final In Leipzig After 2-0 Aggregate Victory

Rayo Vallecano reached the Conference League final after a 1-0 victory over Strasbourg secured a 2-0 aggregate win and a meeting with Crystal Palace on 27 May in Leipzig, with Augusto Batalla’s late penalty save preserving Vallecano’s clean sheet.

The LaLiga club’s progress sets up a Conference League final between two first-time European finalists at the Red Bull Arena, while Vallecano also become the 13th team from Spain to appear in a major European showpiece, underlining the country’s long-term strength in continental competitions.

Spanish clubs extend a strong recent record in France, with Vallecano’s success meaning teams from Spain have now won on each of their last four visits to French opponents in European competitions, matching the number of victories managed across the previous 18 such fixtures.

Inigo Perez’s side produced consistent attacking pressure across the tie, finishing this second leg with 22 attempts and an expected goals figure of 1.73, while Strasbourg generated 11 shots and an xG of 1.6, with Julio Enciso’s missed penalty accounting for 0.79 of that total.

Unai Lopez did not score but played a central midfield role, supplying three chances, completing 18 passes in the final third and delivering four crosses, while Alemao provided the decisive touch on the night with a clinical finish just before half-time.

Vallecano started with intensity, as Alemao’s early header from Andrei Ratiu’s cross forced a spectacular save from Mike Penders, and another misplaced Strasbourg pass then allowed Lopez to drive forward and strike from distance, drawing a further stop from the goalkeeper.

The breakthrough arrived three minutes before the interval when Florian Lejeune’s volley was pushed out by Penders, with Alemao reacting quickest inside the six-yard box to steer a first-time effort into the net, moments before Guela Doue’s reply was blocked by Batalla at the other end.

After the restart, Jorge de Frutos dragged a clear opening wide, Samir El Mourabet shot over and Valentin Barco had an effort superbly blocked by Pep Chavarra, before Strasbourg earned a late penalty when Oscar Valentin handled Doue’s goal-bound strike inside the area.

Enciso stepped up but saw Batalla dive to save the spot-kick, and the goalkeeper then denied Ismael Doukoure from the rebound, sending Vallecano into a Conference League final against Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace, with confidence strengthened by both defensive resilience and sustained attacking output.
