RB Leipzig Secures DFB-Pokal Semi-Final Spot With 1-0 Victory Over Wolfsburg

RB Leipzig triumphed over Wolfsburg with a 1-0 scoreline in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals. Benjamin Sesko's penalty sealed the win, ensuring Leipzig's progression to the semi-finals.

RB Leipzig secured their spot in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolfsburg. The decisive moment came from Benjamin Sesko, who converted a penalty in the second half. Despite having opportunities in the first half, Leipzig couldn't manage a shot on target before halftime. Wolfsburg applied pressure early in the second half, nearly taking the lead when Mohamed Amoura's header hit the post shortly after the break.

Leipzig had to withstand Wolfsburg's attacking efforts, especially after halftime. A crucial moment arrived when Killian Fischer handled the ball inside the box. Sesko confidently took the penalty, sending Marius Muller in the wrong direction in the 69th minute. Following this, Sesko forced Muller into making a sharp save from close range. Wolfsburg responded with a swift counter-attack, but Kevin Behrens couldn't beat Maarten Vandevoordt.

Leipzig Defeats Wolfsburg in DFB-Pokal Match

The victory places Leipzig alongside Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart in the semi-finals. They join third-tier Arminia Bielefeld, who pulled off an upset by defeating Werder Bremen 2-1 earlier in the week. Leipzig aims to reclaim their DFB-Pokal dominance after winning consecutive titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Sesko has been pivotal for Leipzig this season, scoring three goals across consecutive games in this competition. Last season, their hopes for a third straight title were dashed by Wolfsburg with a similar scoreline. However, this time around, Leipzig managed to turn things around with Sesko's contribution.

Despite Wolfsburg having more shots on target (five compared to Leipzig's four), it was Leipzig's overall pressure that made the difference. They registered 16 attempts and accumulated an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.46, with 0.78 coming from Sesko’s penalty alone. In contrast, Wolfsburg managed only an xG of 0.81.

Leipzig's journey continues as they aim to add another DFB-Pokal trophy to their collection after overcoming last season’s disappointment against Wolfsburg. Their performance against strong opponents like Wolfsburg highlights their determination and resilience as they advance further into the competition.
