RB Leipzig secured a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund, enhancing their chances of finishing in the Bundesliga's top four. Niko Kovac's side initially threatened through Serhou Guirassy, but Leipzig soon took charge. Lois Openda hit the crossbar before Xavi Simons scored in the 18th minute. Simons capitalised on a rebound after Gregor Kobel parried David Raum's shot, with Benjamin Sesko missing the follow-up.
Ridle Baku also struck the crossbar as Leipzig maintained pressure. Dortmund nearly levelled when Peter Gulacsi thwarted Karim Adeyemi. However, Leipzig doubled their lead shortly after halftime. Openda was left unmarked at the far post during a corner and expertly volleyed Simons' delivery into the net in the 48th minute.

Dortmund showed signs of improvement as Maximilian Beier hit the woodwork twice consecutively. Despite these efforts, they couldn't recover and suffered their seventh defeat in 11 league matches. This result leaves Dortmund in 11th place, while Leipzig climbed to fifth with 42 points from 26 games, matching Eintracht Frankfurt's tally.
Kovac's tenure at Dortmund hasn't sparked an offensive revival. The team has failed to score in four Bundesliga matches during this season's second half. Before reaching the 17-game mark, they had only one goalless game. Their current tally of 11 league defeats is their highest since the 2014-15 season under Jurgen Klopp when they finished seventh.
Leipzig ended their four-match winless streak with this victory over Dortmund. The win places them level on points with fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who are set to play Bochum on Sunday. Meanwhile, Dortmund continues to struggle for form and consistency this season.
