Real Madrid reach La Liga landmark with 6000 goals in Betis rout

Real Madrid players celebrate

Bengaluru, February 20: La Liga champions Real Madrid became the first side on Sunday (February 18) to score a milestone 6000 goals in Spain’s top-flight.

Marco Asensio’s second goal that handed back Real Madrid the lead was the 6000th goal for Los Blancos.

Madrid started the game well with Asensio slotting home a header from a deflected Cristiano Ronaldo shot. However, Real Betis pushed them on the backfoot with two quick goals from Aissa Mandi and a Nacho own goal to lead 2-1 at half-time.

But as always, Zidane’s men showed true resilience on the field as Sergio Ramos levelled the score with a trademark header five minutes into the second half followed by Marco Asensio’s brace to give them the lead.

It was all a slide as Cristiano netted his 12th for the season for Madrid’s fourth and Karim Benzema finally broke his deadlock to deep in added time to give Madrid a 5-3 victory.

Real now join the elite 6000+ goal club and are the only Spanish team to do so.

Only Everton, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester United have reached 6000 league goals, with Everton very close to scoring their 7000th goal now.

All in all, it was a great night for the Madridistas, who saw a sensational comeback by their team, Cristiano continuing his scoring streak, Benzema break his deadlock and the club creating yet another record with the 6000th goal.

Madrid still trail league leaders Barcelona by 17 points, but get the chance to close the gap with their mid-week clash against Leganes before hosting Alaves in the weekend.
