Real Madrid Confirm Ibrahima Konate As Their Third Summer Signing
Real Madrid have named Ibrahima Konate as their latest defensive signing, completing a free transfer for the former Liverpool centre-back on a four-year contract. Konate becomes Madrid’s third arrival of the summer window, following deals for Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, and will join the squad at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu at the end of this month.
The move gives Konate a reunion with Trent Alexander-Arnold, after several seasons together at Liverpool. The 27-year-old had long been linked with Los Blancos, with interest building over recent months as Madrid sought to deepen defensive options ahead of their second spell under Jose Mourinho.

Konate departed Liverpool as a free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season, clearing the way for Madrid to agree terms. Madrid have already added Cucurella, a 60m (51.8m) signing from Chelsea, while Silva also arrives on a free transfer, giving Mourinho three senior additions before the new campaign.
During Konate’s time at Anfield, the defender made 183 appearances, more than any other French-born player in Liverpool’s history. Of those matches, 154 came alongside Virgil van Dijk, with the pair forming a consistent partnership at centre-back that became central to Liverpool’s defensive structure across domestic and European competitions.
| Player | From | Fee | Contract length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ibrahima Konate | Liverpool | Free transfer | Four years |
| Marc Cucurella | Chelsea | 60m (51.8m) | Not disclosed |
| Bernardo Silva | Free agent | Free transfer | Not disclosed |
Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 and quickly integrated into the starting group. Under Jurgen Klopp, Konate helped Liverpool win two EFL Cups and one FA Cup, then played a role in the Premier League title secured under Arne Slot in the 2024-25 season, adding major domestic honours to his record.
The defender also started alongside Van Dijk in the 2022 Champions League final, when Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Madrid. That match underlined Madrid’s long-term awareness of Konate’s qualities, and the transfer now places the former opponents on the same side as Madrid reshape their defence for forthcoming European and league challenges.
On the international stage, Konate is part of France’s squad at the World Cup and was an unused substitute as France defeated Senegal 3-1 in their opening match on Monday. The timing means Konate’s official registration with Madrid at the end of June will coincide with France’s tournament campaign, linking club and country commitments during a key summer.
Konate’s arrival continues a targeted Real Madrid recruitment drive built around free transfers and selected high-fee deals. With Cucurella, Silva and Konate already confirmed, Mourinho enters the new season with added experience in defence and midfield, while Konate moves into a fresh phase of a career already marked by major club achievements.
