After years of speculation, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Kylian Mbappe officially joined Real Madrid this summer.
The French forward, long linked with a move to the Spanish giants, finally made the switch after deciding not to renew his contract with PSG, which expired this summer.
Despite PSG’s repeated attempts to retain their star player, the appeal of playing for Real Madrid, coupled with a highly lucrative financial package, ultimately proved too strong to resist for the World Cup winner.
However, a new report from the French newspaper L’Equipe has revealed that Mbappe could have ended up at Liverpool instead, after asking to leave PSG in 2022.
This surprising development occurred just two months after he signed a two-year contract extension with PSG, where it was assumed he would continue leading the club’s charge for domestic and European glory.
The report highlights that Mbappe’s frustration originated from PSG’s failure to deliver on their promises to sign high-profile reinforcements to bolster their chances of winning the Champions League.
Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva were rumored targets, but these transfers never materialized, leaving Mbappe feeling betrayed by the club's management.
In response, Mbappe sought a new challenge and reportedly reached an agreement with Liverpool. The Premier League side formally entered the race for the French star and submitted a bid of €200 million (£169 million) to PSG.

However, this was rejected as PSG’s sporting director, Antero Henrique, demanded a staggering €400 million for Mbappe’s transfer, far beyond Liverpool’s financial capabilities.
While Liverpool’s formal bid didn’t succeed, it’s reported that they had secured an agreement with Mbappe himself.
Nevertheless, the move fell through due to PSG’s astronomical asking price. Two years later, after much anticipation, Mbappe finally achieved his dream of joining Real Madrid, leaving behind his Parisian chapter.
