Real Madrid UCL 2024-25 Qualification Scenarios: What Los Blancos Need to Advance?

With just one game left in the UEFA Champions League league phase, Real Madrid finds itself in an unusual position. Despite being the defending champions, Los Blancos are currently outside the automatic qualification spots.

Los Blancos are sitting in 16th place with 12 points. Carlo Ancelotti's side has already secured a place in the knockout playoffs, but they need a series of favorable results to jump into the top eight and earn a direct ticket to the Round of 16.

How Can Real Madrid Secure Automatic Qualification?

To reach the Round of 16 without going through the knockout playoffs, Real Madrid needs a win against Brest - ideally by three goals or more - to improve their goal difference. However, victory alone won't be enough. Several other results must also go their way:

1. Atalanta Must Lose to Barcelona

If Atalanta finishes with 14 points, Madrid can surpass them in the standings.

2. Aston Villa Must Drop Points Against Celtic

If Aston Villa earns only one or zero points, Real Madrid will move ahead.

3. Monaco Must Drop Points to Inter Milan

A draw or defeat for Monaco would help Madrid's cause.

4. Feyenoord and Lille Must Draw

If either team wins, they will secure 16 points, making Madrid's path even harder.

5. Bayer Leverkusen Should Not Win Against Sparta Prague

If Leverkusen wins, they could take the final top-eight spot ahead of Madrid.

Even if all these results unfold in Real Madrid's favor, the battle for the last automatic qualification spot could come down to goal difference. Los Blancos need Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund to drop points as well, or they risk losing out on tiebreakers.

What If Madrid Fails to Qualify Automatically?

If Real Madrid fails to finish in the top eight, they will enter the knockout phase playoffs, where they will have to win a two-legged tie to advance to the Round of 16. Their passage to the next stage seems secure.

However, missing out on direct qualification could result in a tougher draw and extra fixtures in an already packed schedule. With their fate largely dependent on other teams, Real Madrid's final match against Brest is a must-win. But even with three points, they will need some luck on their side to avoid a tricky playoff tie.
