Real Madrid's Alberto Toril Prepares For Champions League Clash Against Arsenal

Alberto Toril, the head coach of Real Madrid, emphasises the importance of reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the team's development. On Tuesday, Madrid will host Arsenal at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in their quarter-final first leg. Since taking charge in 2021, Toril has yet to secure a major title with the club, as Barcelona has dominated Spain's domestic competitions.

Real Madrid finished second in Group B behind Chelsea, led by Sonia Bompastor. This marks their second appearance in the competition's final eight under Toril's leadership. Despite being winless in six previous encounters with English teams, all against Chelsea (D2 L4), this will be their first competitive meeting with Arsenal. Toril anticipates a challenging match against another strong Women's Super League team but remains optimistic about advancing further than they did in the 2021-22 season.

Real Madrid have shown impressive form in this year's Champions League. Only Barcelona (26) scored more goals than Toril's team (20) during the group stage. Meanwhile, Arsenal enters the game with renewed confidence after Renee Slegers replaced Jonas Eidevall as manager. The Gunners have won their last five Champions League matches, equalling their longest winning streak from September 2012 to March 2013.

"I expect a close tie between two teams that are doing really well. I'm really looking forward to this quarter-final," said Toril. "This is the second time we have reached this stage, and getting to the semi-finals would be an important step in our progress. I think we're ready for it."

Toril highlights the need for his players to manage key moments within each leg of the tie effectively. "My players will need to get to grips with the key moments of each leg of the tie," he added. "There will be many matches within the match itself." He emphasises controlling situations and adapting play style by maintaining possession and positioning well.
