Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund: What Happened When Real Madrid Met Dortmund Last Time?

The European champion Real Madrid will face the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in a UCL match at Santiago Bernabeu, in Spain on Tuesday (September 22).

This would be their 12th meeting. The Spanish giants have won five of their past face-offs while the German side have won three, and other matches ended in draws. Their last meeting was in the UCL 2023-24 Final and Madrid won the match by a 2-0 margin.

In the first half, Borussia Dortmund dominated possession and created many great opportunities. In the 13th minute of the match, Julian Brandt shot wide past the goal. Dortmund's Niclas Füllkrug came close to breaking the stalemate, hitting the post, while Karim Adeyemi's penalty appeal was denied. Despite their domination, Dortmund failed to score.

Conversely, Real Madrid appeared unsteady at first but gradually settled into a rhythm as the match went on. Madrid had taken charge by the second half, and defender Dani Carvajal headed in a corner from an assist from the veteran midfielder Toni Kroos in the 74th minute. That goal was the turning point of the match.

Dortmund made an effort to make a comeback, but Madrid's defence held firm and kept applying pressure. After Jude Bellingham's spectacular counterattack, Vinicius Junior scored a well-taken goal in the 84th minute to double Madrid's advantage. This essentially ended the game because Dortmund was unable to rally in the final seconds.

Despite putting in an excellent effort Dortmund failed short of Madrid's skill and accurate finishing. Notably, Madrid's defensive prowess—Courtois made many crucial saves—and their ability to turn crucial situations into goals were the foundations of this triumph. With this victory, Real Madrid maintained their incredible record in the competition and reclaimed their position at the top of European football.

This will be a rematch of last season’s final match, and certainly Dortmund will go for revenge. On the other hand, the Champions League always remains a favourite hunting ground for Los Blancos. However, from that match, almost five months have passed, and Madrid bolstered their attack with the inclusion of Kylian Mbappe. However, the overall form of Real's squad had somehow dipped this season.
