Real Madrid And Manchester City Set For Champions League Play-off Clash

Defending champions Real Madrid will meet Manchester City in the Champions League play-offs. The first leg is scheduled for February 11/12, with the second leg on February 18/19.

Real Madrid, the reigning champions, are set to face Manchester City in a highly anticipated Champions League play-off. This match will determine who advances to the last 16. Madrid ended their league campaign in 11th place, just missing automatic qualification by one point. Meanwhile, City secured their play-off spot with a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge, finishing in 22nd place.

City will host the first leg and have historically won four out of twelve encounters against Madrid in this competition, drawing five and losing three. Despite this, Madrid has a strong record against English clubs, having eliminated them from the knockout stages 13 times. Only Los Blancos themselves have ousted more teams from a single nation, achieving this feat 16 times against German clubs.

The new format allows teams from the same country to meet in the play-offs. An all-French tie sees Brest drawn against Paris Saint-Germain. Juventus and AC Milan avoided facing each other at this stage; instead, they will compete against Dutch teams PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord respectively.

Juventus has been successful in recent matches against Dutch opponents, winning five of their last eight European encounters (drawing two and losing one). This is an improvement over their previous record of four wins in thirteen matches (four draws and five losses). Milan's last triumph over a Dutch team was in October 2008 during the UEFA Cup against Heerenveen.

Bayern Munich narrowly missed automatic qualification despite winning their final game. They will face Celtic with the first leg scheduled in Glasgow. Borussia Dortmund is set to clash with Sporting CP under the upcoming leadership of former Bayern head coach Niko Kovac.

Club Brugge will host Atalanta for their first-leg match after qualifying despite losing to City. Meanwhile, Benfica will travel to Monaco for their opening game. The first legs are scheduled for February 11th and 12th, followed by second legs on February 18th and 19th.

The draw for the last 16 will occur on February 21st, including teams that finished among the top eight. The full play-off draw includes: Brest vs Paris St-Germain, Club Brugge vs Atalanta, Manchester City vs Real Madrid, Juventus vs PSV Eindhoven, Monaco vs Benfica, Sporting vs Borussia Dortmund, Celtic vs Bayern Munich, and Feyenoord vs AC Milan.
