Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has disclosed that the club will engage in discussions with Arsenal regarding a potential transfer for Mikel Merino. The midfielder, who recently won Euro 2024 with Spain, was absent from La Real's squad during their 2-1 defeat to Rayo Vallecano in their LaLiga opener on Sunday.
Aperribay mentioned that Merino has a price and the club is open to selling him if the offer is right. "We will talk to Arsenal and defend the interests of La Real. When we consider that the offer is good, we will say yes," he told Basque Country radio station Onda Vasca.

Merino, who joined Real Sociedad from Newcastle United in 2018, has made 242 appearances for the club. Reports indicate that Arsenal is keen on bringing him back to the Premier League before the transfer window closes, with a suggested fee of around £29.8 million.
The 28-year-old midfielder has entered the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad and has shown reluctance to renew his deal. Aperribay explained, "Merino was clear that he didn't want to say he was renewing and then leave. It wasn't a surprise to us."
Given Merino's stance on not extending his contract, Real Sociedad decided not to include him in their squad for Sunday's match. "We know what Merino's wishes are, so we decided that he should not be called up," Aperribay added.
Arsenal's interest in Merino comes as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season. The potential transfer would mark Merino's return to English football after his previous stint with Newcastle United.
The situation remains fluid as both clubs continue negotiations. Real Sociedad is prepared to sell if Arsenal meets their valuation of the player.
As negotiations progress, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal can secure Merino's services before the transfer window closes. Both clubs are working towards an agreement that satisfies all parties involved.
