Thomas Tuchel expressed unwavering confidence in Reece James' abilities after the Chelsea captain scored on his England return against Latvia. James netted a remarkable free-kick at Wembley, contributing to England's victory alongside goals from Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze. This marked James as the first defender since Stuart Pearce in 1992 to score a direct free-kick for England at Wembley.
James' performance against Latvia was notable, as it was his first start since a draw with Germany in September 2022. He excelled with 96 accurate passes and regained possession more than any other England player, doing so eight times. Tuchel, who coached James at Chelsea, highlighted the player's potential impact for England despite recent injuries.

Tuchel acknowledged James' versatility but noted that using him in a defensive midfield role internationally might not align with his strengths. "We did it rarely at Chelsea," Tuchel explained. "If you play a dominant match like today, he can be a hybrid midfielder to help create an overload." However, Tuchel expressed reservations about this role during high-transition games.
Despite hamstring issues earlier this season, James has made 14 appearances for Chelsea under Enzo Maresca. Recently, he played in a defensive midfield position, scoring against Bournemouth. Tuchel praised James' current form and mental state, emphasising his readiness for international duties.
"I know the quality he has in that foot—it's amazing," Tuchel remarked about James' performance. He added that James deserved to feel proud of his display and noted his excellent physical condition. "When we called him up, he hadn't had many games," Tuchel said, explaining that careful management kept him fit.
Tuchel's familiarity with James stems from their time together at Chelsea, where they won the Champions League in the 2020-21 season along with two other major titles. Despite being aware of James' injury history, Tuchel believes he can significantly contribute to England's success.
The full-back's impressive display against Latvia demonstrated his readiness for international competition. His ability to perform well after limited game time highlights his resilience and skill level. As Tuchel pointed out, "He looks sharp and in shape," indicating that careful management has paid off.
Throughout recent weeks, Tuchel maintained close communication with James and confirmed his positive mindset during training camps. The coach noted that they were confident in his fitness and mental preparedness before calling him up for national duty.
