Chelsea's coach, Enzo Maresca, has expressed his view of Reece James as a midfielder following the Blues' 2-1 victory over Copenhagen in the Conference League last 16. James, who returned to the competition with a goal after a lacklustre first half, helped Chelsea take the lead before Enzo Fernandez added another. Gabriel Pereira's late goal kept Copenhagen hopeful for the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca emphasised the importance of keeping James fit, noting his ability to play in various positions. "I see Reece as a midfielder. Since day one," Maresca stated post-match. He shared that he had sent James a video while on holiday, illustrating how he could excel in midfield. Despite injuries limiting him to just 10 Premier League appearances this season, James remains crucial for Chelsea.

The Chelsea captain's performance was significant as it marked his return to European competition this season. His goal came after Chelsea failed to register any shots on target in the first half. At 25, James has struggled with injuries, playing only 10 league games last season due to recurring issues.
While Chelsea progresses in Europe, Maresca faces challenges securing Champions League qualification for next season. Currently fifth with 46 points, they are closely followed by Aston Villa in tenth place with just four points less. The upcoming match against Leicester City is crucial for maintaining their position.
Maresca highlighted the importance of fan support for their home game against Leicester City on Sunday. "The main game for us is Sunday's game at home and we need our fans for 100 minutes behind the team and pushing the team," he said. A win would be another step towards securing a top-four or top-five finish.
Reflecting on the narrow win against Copenhagen, James acknowledged it as progress for Chelsea. "It was a tough place to go and the atmosphere was amazing," he told TNT Sports. Despite conceding late, he noted their aim was to keep a clean sheet but was pleased with securing the win.
The focus remains on maintaining momentum both domestically and in Europe as Chelsea continues its campaign under Maresca's leadership.
