Reece James has agreed a new six-year Chelsea contract that keeps the captain at Stamford Bridge until 2032. The defender signs this long extension before his previous deal, which was due to end in 2028, showing long-term commitment to the club’s current project.
The 26-year-old right-back is already central to Chelsea’s plans on the pitch. James has scored 16 goals and delivered 30 assists in all competitions for the Blues, while this Premier League season includes four clean sheets and 47 tackles, with only Moises Caicedo ahead on 71.

James took the armband in 2023 after the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta and is now set to lead Chelsea deep into the next decade. Head coach Liam Rosenior described James as the reference point for the squad and confirmed that leadership will continue while Rosenior remains in charge.
Rosenior underlined James’ value during a pre-match press conference before facing Newcastle United. The coach highlighted James’ decision to commit, despite interest elsewhere, as a key moment for the dressing room and a sign of belief in Chelsea’s direction under the current structure.
"I can't stop smiling because we've secured the best footballer in the world in his position," head coach Liam Rosenior said of James during his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Newcastle United. "He had many opportunities to leave this club. It's not just about the size and the stature of the club that he's come through; it's about his belief and confidence in what we're doing and where we want to go. We've had many conversations about it. For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step. When you see Reece from afar, you admire him. He can play many different positions technically, he can score goals, defend, his athleticism. The thing that impresses me most is his humility. You realise why he's having and will have the career he's had as captain of Chelsea. He will be our leader for as long as I'm here."
James’ new agreement caps a long journey through Chelsea’s system. James first joined the club’s academy at six years old, left for a short spell at Fulham, then returned and progressed through the youth ranks before making a senior debut in September 2019.
Since that first appearance, James has played 225 matches in all competitions for Chelsea. Across those games, James has helped the club win the Champions League, the Conference League, the Super Cup and two Club World Cup titles, strengthening the defender’s status among supporters.

The defender spoke about the new Reece James Chelsea contract as a major personal milestone. James stressed an ambition to play prime years at Stamford Bridge, and expressed faith in the ownership, sporting directors, coach and staff to keep the team competing for major trophies.
"I am over the moon to have extended my contractChelsea means so much to me," he told the club's official website. "I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes. I'm excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years."
James’ decision to extend early, four years before the old agreement ended, confirms Chelsea’s long-term defensive core and maintains continuity after earlier departures. With a contract now running until 2032, the club, coaching staff and supporters can plan around James as captain and first-choice right-back for many seasons.
