Tijjani Reijnders expressed his readiness to adapt to any role in Manchester City's midfield under Pep Guardiola, especially following Rodri's recent injury. Reijnders netted his first two goals since joining from AC Milan for £46.5 million (€53.7 million) during City's 3-0 pre-season victory over Palermo. The Dutch international is among six new recruits as City aims to defend their Premier League title in the 2025-26 season.
Rodri's absence poses a challenge for City, as he missed most of last season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Since Rodri joined the team in 2019, City has won 73.6% of matches with him but only 57.4% without him. His current injury might sideline him until September, potentially allowing Reijnders to step into his position early in the campaign.

Reijnders is versatile, capable of playing various roles in central midfield. Last season, he played half of his 37 Serie A matches in a deeper midfield position. After the Palermo match, Reijnders stated he is prepared to fill Rodri's void in City's midfield. "I want to play where the manager wants me to play," he said.
During the Club World Cup, Reijnders showcased his ability by playing three different midfield roles. He emphasised his desire to be a midfielder who can adapt to various positions as needed by the team. "I will play, and I will do my best, of course," Reijnders added.
The team has focused on ball possession strategies and countering teams that employ a low defensive block. Reijnders highlighted the importance of quickly regaining possession after losing the ball. "We've worked a lot on ball possession and what we can do against teams who are, for example, in a really low block," he explained.
Training sessions have helped players understand each other's strengths better, enhancing teamwork on the field. Reijnders noted that playing alongside talented teammates makes it easier for midfielders like himself to perform effectively.
The upcoming season presents challenges and opportunities for Manchester City as they aim for success despite Rodri's absence. With Reijnders' adaptability and commitment, City hopes to maintain their competitive edge in domestic and international competitions.
