The Republic of Ireland has appointed Carla Ward as the new head coach, succeeding Eileen Gleeson. Ward, previously with Aston Villa, will guide the team through their 2027 World Cup journey after failing to qualify for Euro 2025. Her debut match will be against Turkey in the Nations League next month.
Ward expressed her enthusiasm about this role, stating: "This is an unbelievable opportunity, not just with the national team but in helping to add to the fantastic work being done to develop women and girls' football. I'm hugely excited to get going with the Ireland Women's National Team. Over the next two and a half years, as we build towards the World Cup, we can make a real difference and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Marc Canham, Chief Football Officer at FAI, highlighted the significance of Ward's appointment for the national team. He remarked: "We are thrilled to announce a Head Coach of Carla's pedigree. To be able to secure such a top quality coach is a statement of our ambition for where our Women's Team can go."
The decision to bring in Ward reflects Ireland's commitment to advancing women's football. Her experience and vision align with their goals for future success on the international stage.
Ward's leadership is anticipated to bring fresh energy and strategies to the team. Her focus will be on building a competitive squad ready for upcoming challenges.
This strategic move aims to elevate Ireland's presence in women's football globally. With Ward at the helm, there is optimism about achieving significant milestones in forthcoming tournaments.
