In a bizarre twist to the search for the next head coach of the Indian men's football team, a 19-year-old student from VIT Vellore has confessed to orchestrating a prank that fooled even the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding Barcelona and Spain legend, Xavi.
The young engineering student admitted to The Telegraph Online that he created a fake email account - [email protected] - and used OpenAI's ChatGPT to draft a formal job application in the name of Spanish football legend Xavi Hernández.

The email, written to sound professional and convincing, expressed Xavi's supposed interest in the vacant head coach role for the Blue Tigers.
While the AIFF initially received the application as genuine, sources close to the former Barcelona midfielder soon dismissed the claims. They confirmed that Xavi had never applied for the position and suggested that the use of his name might have been an attempt by the AIFF to stir attention around the job opening.
Eventually, the AIFF acknowledged that the applications it received from Xavi and fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola were not legitimate. "Both the applications from Xavi and Guardiola were not genuine," an AIFF official admitted.
Xavi, known for his iconic career as a midfield maestro for both Barcelona and Spain, transitioned into coaching after hanging up his boots. He began his managerial stint at Qatari club Al Sadd before returning to Barcelona, where he led the club to a La Liga title in his debut season as head coach.
The prank has sparked mixed reactions online, raising questions about digital verification processes in official hiring procedures. Meanwhile, the race for the Indian head coach position remains open, with several established names in the fray. Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, ex-India coach Stephen Constantine, Steve Kean, Khalid Jamil, Kibu Vicuna, and Eelco Schattorie have all expressed genuine interest in taking charge of the national side.
As the AIFF continues its hunt for a new leader for the Blue Tigers, this incident has added an unexpected - and slightly embarrassing - chapter to the process.
