Pep Guardiola praised Rodri's impact as he returned to Manchester City's starting line-up against Juventus. This marked his first start since recovering from a knee injury. City secured a 5-2 win, clinching the top spot in Group G at the Club World Cup. Rodri had previously played as a substitute in two matches, totalling 59 minutes.
Guardiola mentioned that Rodri was initially expected to play only 45 minutes. However, at half-time, Rodri requested an additional five to ten minutes on the pitch. "Sooner or later, Rodri had to start," Guardiola explained. "The game was under control." He emphasised Rodri's significance, stating, "Everyone knows how important Rodri is. He is one of the best players in the world."

Rodri's absence has been felt by City, especially during the 2024-25 season when they finished 13 points behind Liverpool. Since joining City in July 2019, he has missed 94 games across all competitions. Without him, City's win rate drops to 57.4%, compared to 73.9% when he plays.
The team's defensive performance also improves with Rodri on the field. They concede an average of 0.8 goals per game when he plays, compared to 1.1 goals without him in the side.
New captain Bernardo Silva also commended Rodri's contribution against Juventus. "I don't have to speak much about Rodri; his career speaks for itself," Silva said. He acknowledged that while recovering from injury takes time, Rodri is gradually returning to his best form.
Silva added that even though Rodri isn't yet at full fitness, his presence significantly aids the team. "His character makes him a big player," Silva noted.
Manchester City will face Al-Hilal in the round of 16 on Monday. The team hopes that with Rodri back in action, they can maintain their strong performance and advance further in the competition.
The return of such a key player could be crucial for City's success this season as they aim for more victories and titles.
