Rodri Injury Update: Guardiola Anticipates Extended Absence For Key Manchester City Midfielder

Pep Guardiola has indicated that Rodri may face a long lay-off due to a serious knee injury sustained during a match. This potential ACL injury could significantly affect Manchester City's performance this season.

Pep Guardiola anticipates a lengthy absence for Rodri, though Manchester City awaits official confirmation regarding the midfielder's injury severity. Rodri suffered a knee injury during City's 2-2 draw with Arsenal, awkwardly twisting while challenging Thomas Partey. Reports from Barcelona suggest an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, potentially sidelining him for the season. This would be a significant setback for City, where he has been pivotal since 2019.

Rodri's absence is expected to impact City's performance significantly. Last season, he played in 50 matches across all competitions, losing only one. Without him, City's win rate dropped from 76% to 55.6%, and their points-per-game decreased from 2.5 to 1.7. Guardiola acknowledges the challenge of replacing such an influential player.

Guardiola Expects Long Lay-Off for Rodri

Guardiola expressed his concerns about the situation before City's EFL Cup match against Watford, which they won 2-1 to advance to the next round. He was unable to provide updates on Rodri's condition at that time but later admitted in a post-match interview that the Spain international would be out for an extended period.

Guardiola stated, "Rodri will be out for a long time, a while." He mentioned that some opinions suggest it might be shorter than initially feared but awaited final confirmation from doctors regarding the injury and necessary surgery. "We should know tomorrow," he added.

"When a team doesn't play with the best midfielder in the world for a long, long time, it is a big blow," Guardiola told reporters. "Yes, he's irreplaceable. But my duty is to find a solution." Guardiola emphasised the need for adaptability and finding alternatives within the team structure.

The former Atletico Madrid player's potential ACL injury could mean missing the entire season. Such an outcome would be devastating for City as Rodri has been crucial since his arrival in 2019. Guardiola remains hopeful yet realistic about finding ways to cope without him.

As City awaits further medical evaluations and decisions on surgery, Guardiola prepares to adjust tactics and explore squad options to mitigate Rodri's absence. The team's resilience will be tested as they navigate upcoming challenges without their key midfielder.
