Rodrygo Says 'I Deserved It': Frustrated By Ballon D'Or List Omission

Real Madrid's Rodrygo believes he deserved a spot on the Ballon d'Or shortlist, citing his significant contributions last season. Despite scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists, his versatility might have been a double-edged sword.

Rodrygo feels he should have been considered for this year's Ballon d'Or, attributing his omission to his versatility. The Real Madrid forward was left out of the 30-player shortlist announced last week. Despite scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists in 51 matches last season, Rodrygo was overlooked.

His teammates Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, new Madrid star Kylian Mbappe, and even the now-retired Toni Kroos were all nominated. "I was upset, I think I deserved it," Rodrygo told ESPN. "I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; I think they deserved it also. But I think I had a place in the 30."

Rodrygo Upset Over Ballon d'Or Snub

Rodrygo has played various positions under Carlo Ancelotti, which he believes might not always showcase his best abilities. "Often, I'm just filling spaces," Rodrygo added. "Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That's it."

This flexibility may have hindered his recognition despite his significant contributions on the field. Only three players—Ilkay Gundogan (211), Valverde (211), and Iago Aspas (193)—contributed more shots in open play in LaLiga last season than Rodrygo (171). He also created 80 chances for his teammates.

The 23-year-old's impressive statistics highlight his impact on the team. His ability to adapt to different roles demonstrates his value as a versatile player. However, this adaptability might have worked against him when it came to individual accolades like the Ballon d'Or.

"It was a surprise but there is not much I can do as I'm not the one who decides these things," Rodrygo remarked about his exclusion from the shortlist.

Despite feeling disappointed by the snub, Rodrygo remains committed to contributing to Real Madrid's success in any capacity required by the team.
