Cesc Fabregas had hoped Diao would make his sixth Serie A appearance before joining Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite Fabregas' request to Senegal coach Pape Thiaw not to select Diao due to his injuries, he was still included.

Fabregas expressed concern over Diao's inclusion in Senegal's squad given his injury history. "I am a huge fan of international teams... I just asked for a little common sense for them not to call him," he said. Fabregas felt it was unfair for Diao to face pressure about missing out on future opportunities like the World Cup.
