Gian Piero Gasperini Would Be Happy With Roma Finishing Fourth In Serie A This Season

Gian Piero Gasperini expressed satisfaction with AS Roma's potential fourth-place finish in Serie A. He emphasised the team's spirit and upcoming matches against Juventus as crucial for their title aspirations.

Roma's recent victory over Como has positioned them just three points from the top of Serie A. Wesley's decisive goal in the 60th minute secured a 1-0 win at Stadio Olimpico, marking Roma's 10th victory in their first 15 matches. This performance is their best start since the 2017-18 season when they achieved 11 wins.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini expressed satisfaction with the team's current standing but emphasised the importance of maintaining strong performances. "I never settle early, but I would be very happy with that," he stated. Gasperini highlighted the enthusiasm of Roma's fans, noting how their support boosts team morale during home games.

Gasperini Welcomes Potential Fourth Place for Roma

Roma aims to solidify their position in the top four by defeating Juventus, who are four points behind them. A win in Turin could also enhance their chances of competing for a Scudetto, a title they haven't won since 2001. However, Gasperini acknowledged that teams like Inter and Napoli might have stronger squads.

Despite this, Gasperini praised his players' dedication and spirit. "Theoretically, there are stronger players in other teams, but do they have the same spirit, the same work ethic?" he questioned. He believes Roma is a formidable team working hard to improve and hopes to maintain this momentum.

Como faced challenges as forward Assane Diao left the field after just 37 minutes due to a hamstring injury. Cesc Fabregas had hoped Diao would make his sixth Serie A appearance before joining Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite Fabregas' request to Senegal coach Pape Thiaw not to select Diao due to his injuries, he was still included.

Fabregas expressed concern over Diao's inclusion in Senegal's squad given his injury history. "I am a huge fan of international teams... I just asked for a little common sense for them not to call him," he said. Fabregas felt it was unfair for Diao to face pressure about missing out on future opportunities like the World Cup.

The situation highlights ongoing debates about player welfare and international duties. As Roma continues its campaign, balancing player health and competitive ambitions remains crucial for all involved parties.
