Ronaldo 2030 World Cup: Portuguese Star Could Feature Under Martinez Guidance
Cristiano Ronaldo is being backed to feature for Portugal at the 2030 World Cup, even at 41. National team coach Roberto Martinez believes Ronaldo has the desire and physical condition to continue. Martinez sees no clear reason why Ronaldo must stop after the 2026 tournament in North America.
Ronaldo arrives at the 2026 World Cup after leading Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title. The forward is preparing for a record sixth World Cup appearance, extending the mark jointly held with Lionel Messi. Ronaldo already stands alone as the only male player to score in five editions.

The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, increasing interest in Ronaldo’s future. Many observers expect the 2026 competition to be Ronaldo’s last, given age and physical demands. Martinez, however, rejects that assumption and insists Ronaldo can still aim for 2030.
When asked about Ronaldo competing at the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, Martinez told Cadena Ser radio: "No one should doubt that. He's earned it. We would love to be able to pass on Cristiano Ronaldo's model to all young footballers in Portugal because he is a role model."
| Player | World Cup appearances | World Cup matches played | Unique World Cup record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 6th World Cup in 2026 | 22 | Only male player to score in five World Cups |
| Lionel Messi | 6 | Not specified | Shares record for most World Cup tournaments played |
Martinez links Ronaldo’s durability to a mindset that resists comfort after major victories. The coach points out that many Champions League or Ballon d'Or winners relax after success. For Martinez, Ronaldo’s approach offers a reference point for younger Portugal players and for professionals globally.
We, the [national team] coaching staff, have come to a conclusion: Cristiano Ronaldo does not play to win a specific collective or individual title. Cristiano is not defined by what he eats, but by the hunger he possesses. Whatever Cristiano wins, the very next day he has the same hunger to improve. I have worked with many players that have won a Champions League or a Ballon d'Or and the next day they lose their appetite. What we have with Ronaldo is an example of a different mentality. I believe that having that goal is what allows for longevity. Of course, there is a genetic aspect, the work he puts inhe uses everything that can help his bodyand his mentality.
Ronaldo’s message after Al-Nassr’s title win underlines that same attitude, stressing effort and collective commitment. The combination of mentality, strict physical work and favourable genetics persuades Martinez that Ronaldo can extend a record World Cup career. Whether or not 2030 becomes reality, Portugal view Ronaldo as an enduring standard.
