Ronaldo: Experience Key To Manchester United's Rebuilding Efforts

Cristiano Ronaldo stresses the need for knowledge in Manchester United's rebuilding process, advising Erik ten Hag to leverage Ruud van Nistelrooy's experience. Despite early season struggles, Ronaldo believes in consulting former stars for success.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Manchester United's rebuilding efforts require insight from knowledgeable individuals. He urged Erik ten Hag to seek advice from assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Red Devils striker. United began the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Fulham but then faced consecutive defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool.

This season marks the second time under Ten Hag that United has lost two of their first three league games, a rarity in their history. The team has also scored three goals fewer than expected based on their xG (expected goals) metric, netting only two goals compared to an xG of 5.2. This discrepancy is the largest for any Premier League team this term.

Ronaldo on Man Utd's Rebuild

Van Nistelrooy recently joined Ten Hag's coaching staff. Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for United between 2001 and 2006. Ronaldo, who has scored 145 goals in 346 games across two spells at Old Trafford, believes that Van Nistelrooy’s experience can be invaluable.

Ronaldo emphasised the importance of leveraging the knowledge of former players and coaches familiar with the club. "As the Man United manager; you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the Premier League or Champions League," he told Rio Ferdinand on FiveUK. "You've to say: 'maybe we've not got the potential, but we're going to try'. You have to try! If Ten Hag listens to Ruud van Nistelrooy, maybe he can help."

He added that figures like Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Sir Alex Ferguson should be consulted. "You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge," Ronaldo asserted.

Upcoming Fixtures

United will face Southampton this weekend. They have an impressive record against Southampton, remaining unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League visits since a defeat in August 2003. Additionally, United have lost just one of their last 30 Premier League matches against promoted sides, winning 15 of their last 17 such games.

The Red Devils' recent form highlights the need for strategic adjustments and experienced guidance. By integrating insights from seasoned professionals like Van Nistelrooy and other former players, Manchester United aims to navigate these challenges effectively.
