Ronaldo Nazario Settles Messi vs Ronaldo GOAT Debate After World Cup Openers

Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazario believes it is finally time for football fans to stop debating and acknowledge Lionel Messi as the greatest player of all time following the Argentine's record-equalling World Cup hat-trick against Algeria.

Messi vs Ronaldo

Messi rolled back the years in Argentina's FIFA World Cup 2026 opener, scoring all three goals in a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria. The treble saw the 38-year-old equal Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup scoring record of 16 goals while helping the defending champions begin their title defence in style.

The performance also drew admiration from one of football's greatest strikers.

Ronaldo: The World Should Stop Hiding

Speaking after Messi's latest World Cup masterclass, Ronaldo insisted there should no longer be any doubt about the Argentine's place in football history.

"Records are made to be broken, and the person who breaks it doesn't surprise any football fan in the world," Ronaldo said.

"Every time Messi steps onto the pitch, everything else becomes historic and elegant. It's time for the world to stop hiding and accept the fact that he is the best player of all time."

The two-time World Cup winner added that Messi's longevity and ability to continue performing at the highest level makes his achievements even more remarkable.

"He continues to perform every season, and at the World Cup, yet there are still doubts about him. It's an unforgettable and historic night that will go down in history forever," he added.

Messi Equals World Cup Record

Messi's hat-trick in Kansas City moved him level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals.

The Argentine captain opened the scoring with a stunning strike from outside the box before adding two more goals in the second half to complete his first-ever World Cup hat-trick.

With group-stage matches against Austria and Jordan still to come, Messi now has the opportunity to become the outright leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

The Inter Miami star is also chasing another piece of history as he looks to lead Argentina to back-to-back World Cup titles following their triumph in Qatar four years ago.

## Zlatan Joins The Praise

Former Barcelona and AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic also weighed in on the debate, insisting football may never see another player like Messi.

"I don't believe we'll see another Messi, because he's special," Zlatan said.

"It seems like football was made for him. Everything he touches turns to gold."

The Swede added that even another World Cup triumph would not significantly alter Messi's legacy.

"Winning another World Cup won't change his status as the greatest of all time. It will just be another trophy in the trophy room."

Messi's latest heroics have once again reignited discussions around the greatest player in football history, but for Ronaldo Nazario at least, the debate is already over.
