Erik ten Hag has chosen not to hold Cristiano Ronaldo responsible for any issues during their shared time at Manchester United. Ronaldo returned to the club in 2021, a year before Ten Hag became manager. The Portuguese forward left a year later, ending his contract just before the 2022 World Cup after disagreements with Ten Hag.
During his second tenure at Manchester United, Ronaldo managed to score 19 goals in 40 Premier League matches and provided three assists from 32 chances he created. Despite these contributions, Ten Hag was dismissed last October following a disappointing start to the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Ten Hag has expressed that he does not see Ronaldo as a problem. "For me he's [Ronaldo] no problem. He was never the problem and I think that's the past," said Ten Hag. He emphasised that what happened is behind them, noting that they won two trophies at Manchester United afterward.
The Dutch manager has now shifted his focus entirely to his new role at Bayer Leverkusen. "I think it was what happened. It's the past and after that, we won two trophies at Manchester United," he stated, wishing Ronaldo well for the future.
Despite the challenges faced during their time together, Ten Hag remains positive about his experiences at Manchester United. He acknowledges the achievements they accomplished and looks forward to new opportunities with Bayer Leverkusen.
