Ronaldo Will Not Make Rash Decisions Over Portugal Future After World Cup Exit

Portugal’s World Cup journey ends in the last 16, with Cristiano Ronaldo saying the exit hurts but insisting the campaign leaves no regrets. Ronaldo confirms this tournament is the final World Cup of a long international career, yet says decisions about the wider Portugal future will wait.

"I'm sad to be leaving the World Cup like this, he said. I gave it my all. I did my best, and I'm leaving with a clear conscience. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won't be making any rash decisions. I don't make decisions in the heat of the moment. I've won three titles for Portugal; before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal hadn't won a single title. The biggest title the national team has ever won was in 2016, the European Championship, which, to be honest, is just as significant to me as a World Cup. It's always sad to be knocked out of a major tournament. It's a World Cup. The team was really coming into its own. We played well, in my view. It could have gone either way, but that's football. We have to pick ourselves up and carry on. It's frustrating to go out like this, but we can hold our heads high."

Ronaldo Won't Rush Portugal Future

Ronaldo had stated before facing Spain that this World Cup would be the last of a long career. The knockout defeat ends that promise with a 1-0 loss, sealed by Mikel Merino’s late goal. Ronaldo started a World Cup match for the 25th time, with only Lionel Messi ahead on 27.

Spain limited Ronaldo despite past problems against the forward at World Cups. Ronaldo has scored three World Cup goals against Spain, more than versus any other opponent, yet saw no reward this time. Ronaldo had three attempts, more than any Portugal teammate, but none found the target.

Portugal’s struggle fits a broader pattern at World Cup knockout stages. Portugal have lost or been eliminated in six of the last eight knockout games, after losing only one of the first five. Against Spain, Portugal failed to register a single shot on target in the second half.

Two of Portugal’s five efforts after the interval came during stoppage time, underlining Spain’s defensive control. The match stayed tight for long spells, but the late goal exposed Portugal’s lack of clear chances. The performance mixed steady organisation with a shortage of decisive attacking play when pressure increased.

After the defeat, Roberto Martinez confirmed a change on the Portugal bench. Martinez stated that the role as head coach ends with this World Cup elimination, though the coach stressed satisfaction with the squad’s attitude and tactical discipline across the tournament and during the narrow defeat to Spain.

"It was a match of a high level technically and tactically, he told DAZN. Two teams with a very similar idea in wanting to have the ball, in using individual talent to get in front of the opponent's goal and with fantastic individual talent. A shame. I think that the draw and reaching extra time would have been the fairest thing. The first clear chance that Spain had was a goal. Congratulations to Spain, may everything go very well. And also congratulate my players. The way we played is very proud."

The national team account later highlighted Ronaldo on social media, underlining the forward’s central role in Portugal’s World Cup story. The message linked Ronaldo’s handle with World Cup and Portugal hashtags, reflecting continued backing from the federation despite the early knockout.

Portugal leave this World Cup with disappointment over a late defeat, yet Ronaldo points to earlier titles, including Euro 2016, as proof of progress. The team reflects on missed chances against Spain, while planning a new coaching era after Martinez, and considering what role Ronaldo may play with Portugal.
