Manchester United have announced Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. Amorim has committed to a contract lasting until the end of the 2026-27 season. The club paid an £8.3 million release clause to Sporting CP for his services. He replaces Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed after a loss to West Ham left United 14th in the Premier League standings.
Amorim, aged 39, is the second Portuguese manager at Manchester United, following Jose Mourinho's tenure from May 2016 to December 2018. Before joining United, Amorim led Sporting CP to two Primeira Liga titles. However, he will not assume his new role until November 11 due to a notice period at Sporting.

During his time with Sporting CP, Amorim managed a record 156 Primeira Liga matches, achieving a remarkable win rate of 76.92% with 120 victories. This makes him the most successful coach in Sporting's history according to Opta's records. Under his leadership, Sporting won their first league title in nearly two decades in 2021 and again in the 2023-24 season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will temporarily manage Manchester United for their next three fixtures against Chelsea, PAOK, and Leicester City. Amorim's debut match as head coach will be against Ipswich Town at Portman Road following the international break.
Amorim expressed that he would provide more insights after Sporting's upcoming game against Estrela da Amadora on Friday. His appointment comes at a crucial time for Manchester United as they aim to improve their position in the Premier League standings and regain form under new leadership.
The club shared their excitement about Amorim's arrival on social media: "It's done. Bem-vindo ao Manchester United, Ruben Amorim #MUFC." This announcement marks a significant change as fans anticipate how Amorim's strategies will influence the team's performance.
This managerial change is seen as a strategic move by Manchester United to bring fresh ideas and success back to Old Trafford. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Amorim's tactics will shape the future of the team in upcoming seasons.
