Ruben Amorim Named New AC Milan Head Coach

AC Milan have confirmed Ruben Amorim as the new AC Milan head coach on a long-term deal, handing responsibility for reviving a side that missed Champions League qualification and finished fifth in Serie A after a late-season collapse.

The Portuguese coach, formerly in charge of Sporting CP and Manchester United, has reportedly agreed a three-year contract that runs until June 2029, stepping in after Massimiliano Allegri left San Siro last month during a wider restructuring.

Milan had looked on course for a Champions League place following a strong opening half of the campaign, but form dropped sharply, with only five wins from the last 13 league fixtures, one draw and seven defeats, which led to a fifth-place finish and their first ever season outside the top four during the Champions League era.

Amorim is expected to push Milan back into the Serie A title race next season while also leading a deep Europa League run, a competition in which the 41-year-old guided Manchester United to the 2024-25 final before losing to Tottenham.

During Amorim’s spell at Old Trafford, there were 63 matches in all competitions, bringing 24 victories, 18 draws and 21 defeats; his exit followed a post-match press conference in which Amorim appeared to criticise the Manchester United hierarchy.

Domestic league results under Amorim were under particular scrutiny, as Manchester United won only 15 of 47 Premier League fixtures, producing a 32 per cent win rate, which stands as the lowest record for any Manchester United manager in that competition.

Amorim has not taken another job since the dismissal in January, ending a 14-month tenure at Old Trafford, and now returns to the touchline with one of Europe’s most decorated clubs seeking a reset after missing out on UEFA’s elite tournament.

"There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine," said Amorim. "I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours represent. I can't wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan."

The appointment gives Milan a coach with recent European final experience but also a mixed domestic record, and club leadership will expect Amorim to convert that experience into more consistent league performances while reconnecting with a global fanbase that associates AC Milan with competing regularly for major honours.
