Rudi Garcia would welcome VAR after controversy

Marseille coach Rudi Garcia wants the video assistant referee (VAR) to be introduced in the Europa League after his side reached the final.

Marseille players celebrate after scoring scoring late goal to book Europa League final spot

Salzburg, May 4: Marseille coach Rudi Garcia wants the video assistant referee (VAR) to be introduced in the Europa League after his side reached the final.

An extra-time goal from Rolando against Red Bull Salzburg saw Marseille book a spot in the decider 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 loss on Thursday (May 3).

Garcia ready for VAR after corner controversy

But the clash in Salzburg was just the latest to be marred by controversy in European football this week, with Rolando's goal coming from a corner incorrectly awarded to Marseille.

Garcia would welcome the introduction of the VAR in the Europa League, saying it could eliminate mistakes.

"I can't wait for VAR," he said.

"That way we won't talk about their second goal, where they had a man offside. We wouldn't have to discuss the penalty we weren't given for a handball in the box, or the corner we were given which led to the goal, which should have been a goal kick.

"VAR will put an end to this."

An Amadou Haidara goal had earlier given the hosts hope before Bouna Sarr's own goal drew them level in the tie.

But Garcia was delighted for his team and he is desperate to cause an upset in the final against Atletico Madrid in Lyon on May 16.

"I'm very satisfied. Getting to the final isn't an end in itself," he said.

"We're obviously outsiders against Atletico, in France, in Lyon, at home for this final.

"Even if they have a better chance of winning we'll do our best to win the trophy. It's not enough to get to the final, we don't want to end such a nice run."
