Following Manchester United's worst-ever start to a Premier League season, which saw them drop to 14th place after nine games, the club has dismissed Erik Ten Hag. In his place, United has appointed assistant manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy as the caretaker manager.
Van Nistelrooy, a club legend and former star striker, steps in amid a crucial phase for the Red Devils. As the interim head coach, he aims to steady the ship, bringing his wealth of experience as both a player and a coach to the forefront while the club looks for a long-term solution.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, born Rutgerus Johannes Martinus van Nistelrooij on July 1, 1976, in Oss, Netherlands, is widely recognised for his illustrious career as a footballer. The Dutchman, a lethal finisher, played for top clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid. He retired in 2012 after a final stint with Malaga, leaving behind a legacy of over 300 career goals and numerous accolades.
Post-retirement, Van Nistelrooy swiftly transitioned into coaching. Starting as an intern with PSV Eindhoven’s under-17 squad in 2013/14, he progressed through the club's ranks, ultimately taking charge of PSV's youth sides. He was pivotal in shaping young talents and further honed his tactical approach, which leaned towards offensive-minded football reminiscent of his playing days under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
In March 2022, Van Nistelrooy was appointed head coach of PSV Eindhoven’s first team. His time in charge saw notable achievements, including winning the 2022/23 KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2023. He successfully guided the club to a second-place finish in the Eredivisie, before stepping down due to internal issues within the club.
Van Nistelrooy is known for his tactical flexibility, favouring formations such as 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. His teams aim to dominate possession with compact structures, effective pressing, and a focus on control in the central areas. He’s an advocate of overlapping full-backs and deploying a back three during attacking transitions to maintain defensive stability.
In July 2024, Van Nistelrooy rejoined Manchester United as assistant manager under Erik ten Hag. He played a crucial role in training sessions and tactical meetings, assisting in the Red Devils’ efforts to return to the pinnacle of English football. With Ten Hag’s departure, Van Nistelrooy’s elevation to caretaker manager presents a chance to stamp his authority on the club during a challenging phase.
