Sadio Mane's Late Free-Kick Sends Senegal Through To AFCON 2025 While Ghana Faces Elimination

Sadio Mane's last-minute free-kick secured Senegal's qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025. Meanwhile, Ghana struggles with a defeat against Sudan and risks missing the tournament for the first time since 2004.

Sadio Mane's dramatic free-kick in the final moments secured Senegal's place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. They narrowly defeated Malawi 1-0 on Tuesday. Despite controlling much of the game, Senegal struggled to penetrate Malawi's solid defence. Goalkeeper William Thole made several crucial saves. However, after Robert Saiz fouled Mane just outside the box, the Al-Nassr player scored in the sixth minute of added time.

Senegal, who won the tournament in 2021, now join Burkina Faso in qualifying for next year's competition in Morocco. Both teams have accumulated 10 points in Group L. This victory highlights Senegal's determination and skill as they prepare for another chance at continental glory.

Senegal Qualifies for AFCON; Ghana in Trouble

In contrast, Ghana faces a challenging path to qualification from Group F. They suffered a 2-0 loss to Sudan at the Martyrs of February Stadium. This defeat puts their participation in jeopardy for the first time since 2004. Despite having talented players like Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Inaki Williams, Ghana has yet to win any of their four qualifying matches.

Sudan's Ahmed Al-Tash and Mohamed Abdel Rahman scored two quick goals in the second half to seal Ghana's fate. As a result, Ghana is five points behind the top two teams. They must secure victories against group leaders Angola and Niger next month to keep their hopes alive.

The upcoming matches are crucial for Ghana as they aim to avoid missing out on the prestigious tournament. The pressure is mounting on them to deliver strong performances against formidable opponents. Meanwhile, Senegal can celebrate their achievement and focus on preparations for next year's competition.
