SAFF U20 Semi-Final: India Eye Final Spot As Defending Champions Face Resilient Bhutan

India face Bhutan in the SAFF U20 Championship semi-final on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the National Stadium in Malé, Maldives. India are the defending champions and topped Group B. They beat Pakistan 3-0 and drew 1-1 with Bangladesh. Bhutan reached the last four from Group A. They lost to Nepal, drew 0-0 with Maldives, then beat Sri Lanka 1-0 with an injury-time goal.

India used a three-day break to recover and reset. The squad spent time at the beach, which helped them relax and build team unity. Training then saw strong energy and focus. Players showed sharp movement and clear intent as work for the knockout stage increased.

Head coach Mahesh Gawali praised the group for their effort. He said, "The boys have been playing well as they handled pressure well. We didn't get time to prepare before the tournament, but the boys are giving their 100 per cent. I am really happy and proud of the way we have performed so far."

Gawali also pointed to areas for improvement in attack and defence. "Nothing is easy. We created chances to score, and we need to convert more. We also need to be more focused when defending," he added. India want better finishing and steady concentration in the semi-final.

Bhutan’s path has shown their stubborn style and late drive. After defeat to Nepal, they held hosts Maldives 0-0. They then edged Sri Lanka 1-0 with a stoppage-time strike. That late goal stressed their habit of staying alert until the last whistle.

Both teams have in-form forwards, which adds another focus point. For India, Vishal Yadav and Omang Dodum have scored two goals each. For Bhutan, Dhendup Gyeltshen also has two goals. Their form and decisions in the box could shape the result.

Team Player Goals
India Vishal Yadav 2
India Omang Dodum 2
Bhutan Dhendup Gyeltshen 2

The tie will go straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes. There is no extra time. That rule raises the stress on every chance and save. India aim to stay disciplined, manage pressure, respect Bhutan’s threat, and earn a place in the SAFF U20 final.
