Pep Lijnders, previously an assistant at Liverpool, has been dismissed from his position as head coach of RB Salzburg. Lijnders, who had a notable nine-year tenure with Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, took the Salzburg role in May. Despite his experience, his second attempt as a head coach was disappointing, with Salzburg currently sitting fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Salzburg's recent form has been lacklustre, managing only two wins in their last eight matches across all competitions. They concluded their winter break with a 3-0 victory over Austria Klagenfurt on Saturday. This decision to part ways with Lijnders comes just weeks before Jurgen Klopp is set to assume a new role overseeing Red Bull's global soccer strategy, which includes Salzburg.

In a joint statement, Stephan Reiter and Rouven Schroder of Salzburg expressed their dissatisfaction with the season so far. "We began recently to analyse, as planned, what has unfortunately not been a satisfactory season so far," they stated. "It was clear to see that in many of our matches we have been far short of our own requirements and aims."
Salzburg's Champions League campaign has also been challenging. They have secured only three points from six games. Their sole victory came against Feyenoord in November with a 3-1 win. However, they suffered heavy losses against teams like Sparta Prague (0-3), Brest (0-4), Dinamo Zagreb (0-2), Bayer Leverkusen (0-5), and Paris Saint-Germain (0-3).
The team is set to face Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in January for their final league-phase games. Although not yet mathematically out of play-off contention, Opta's supercomputer gives them less than a 0.1% chance of finishing in the top 24.
Salzburg is actively searching for a new coach and aims to have someone appointed by January 3, 2025. The club is eager to start training under new leadership by this date. The management emphasised their commitment to finding a suitable replacement swiftly.
Despite recent setbacks, Salzburg remains focused on improving their performance both domestically and in European competitions. The club hopes that fresh leadership will help them meet their goals and expectations moving forward.
