Samir Zeljkovic admits 'Biggest' Goal in Career, says Mohun Bagan deserved IFA Shield Winners

Samir Zeljkovic's chest trap and then a clinical finish was the pivotal moment as Mohun Bagan eclipsed their arch rivals East Bengal to win the IFA Shield Trophy on Thursday (October 8).

The Salt Lake Stadium witnessed a crafty play from the Bosnian, who broke the defense line and received a lobbed pass from Sahal Abdul Samad, and then slotted it past the East Bengal keeper Phurba Lachenpa to give his team the lead, which proved to be the winning goal.

From Sarajevo to Kolkata, the distance may well be in thousands of kilometres, but Samir's name has been reverberating in the Mohun Bagan supporters' lips. The 29-year-old is known for his defensive solidity, but his ambition to join the attack was the crucial path that secured Mohun Bagan's 22nd IFA Shield title, first consecutive shield crown for them in 27 years.

"We really worked hard after the Durand Cup defeat. It was a tough month behind us. Today, we deserved to win and we were better. I hope this pushes us for the first ISL match. It's always good to win against East Bengal. I hope this win will give us the momentum," Zeljkovic said after the win.

The Bosnian also congratulated his teammates and said the team wanted to win more, especially after losing the last final against their arch rivals. He also thanked the fans for their support, who have been beside the team through thick and thin.

Samir Zeljkovic admits Goal as his Biggest

When asked if this goal is the most instrumental of his career, the Mariners midfielder admits it probably is, but stresses the team victory was more significant.

"Maybe (Yes), it's a final, and it's a derby. I am glad I scored today. But, first of all, this is a team win. Today, I scored and next game, it'll be someone else," he concluded.

Mohun Bagan's next assignment is in Guwahati, as they fly to face Northeast United in their first Indian Super League match of the season.
