Santiago Castro's Late Header Secures Bologna's Spot In Coppa Italia Semi-Finals Against Atalanta

Santiago Castro scored a late goal to secure Bologna's 1-0 victory over Atalanta, advancing them to the Coppa Italia semi-finals for the first time since 1999. The match showcased Bologna's resilience following their Champions League exit.

Bologna secured a place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Atalanta, thanks to Santiago Castro's late goal. The match, held on Tuesday, saw Vincenzo Italiano's team dominate much of the play. Their persistence paid off ten minutes before the end, setting up a clash against either Juventus or Empoli in the next round.

Atalanta started strong, with Charles De Ketelaere testing Bologna's goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski early. Davide Zappacosta also had a chance but shot over the bar. Bologna gradually found their rhythm and nearly scored before halftime when Jhon Lucumi's attempt was easily saved by Rui Patricio.

Bologna Advances to Coppa Italia Semis

Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta aimed to recover from recent draws against Barcelona and Torino. However, they struggled to create clear opportunities after the break. As both teams sought a decisive goal, Italiano made a crucial substitution by bringing on Castro at the Gewiss Stadium.

Castro made an immediate impact just two minutes after entering the field. He headed Charalampos Lykogiannis's precise cross past Patricio at the back post, securing Bologna's win. This victory marked an important moment for Bologna as they returned to this stage of the Coppa Italia for the first time since 1999 under Carlo Mazzone.

Bologna had been eliminated in their last two quarter-final appearances but avoided a third consecutive exit this time. They were deserving winners, achieving an expected goals (xG) total of 1.43 from 13 shots compared to Atalanta's 0.87 from an equal number of attempts.

The triumph was especially significant following Bologna's recent Champions League exit. It demonstrated their resilience and ability to perform under pressure in domestic competitions.

This victory not only highlights Bologna's current form but also reflects their determination to succeed in Italian football. With their eyes set on further progress, they now await their semi-final opponents with confidence.
