Scotland 2026 World Cup Squad Named With Scott McTominay Leading The Charge
Scotland have confirmed a 26-player squad for the 2026 World Cup, with Scott McTominay seen as the central figure for Steve Clarke. The national team return to the tournament for the first time since 1998, after ending a 28-year absence by finishing top of a World Cup qualifying group for the first time since 1982.
Midfield options look strong, with McTominay joined by Napoli team-mate Billy Gilmour, Aston Villa’s John McGinn and Norwich’s Kenny McLean. Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson again captains the side, while Kieran Tierney is recalled. Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland and Southampton forward Ross Stewart are rewarded after productive seasons for their clubs.

McTominay is expected to carry a major share of Scotland’s attacking threat at the World Cup. The midfielder scored twice in qualifying, finishing as joint-top scorer for the team. Since the beginning of 2023, McTominay has 13 goals and two assists for Scotland in all competitions, at least six more goal involvements than any other squad member.
Clarke’s selection continues a steady period for the national side under this head coach. Clarke now leads Scotland into a third consecutive major tournament, after Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, which is more than any previous national team head coach. However, Scotland’s past record shows the scale of the task facing this squad on the global stage.
Scotland’s Group C schedule begins against Haiti on 13 June, before further group matches with Morocco and Brazil. The country have yet to advance from the first round in any of eight previous World Cup appearances, more often than any other team that has never reached the second phase. Including European Championships, Scotland have exited at the opening stage in all 12 major tournaments contested.
The announcement of the Scotland World Cup squad was also shared through the Scotland National Team’s social channels, confirming the 26 players travelling to the finals and directing supporters to further details of the selection.
The full Scotland World Cup squad covers three goalkeepers, 11 defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards. The list below shows every player and club, underlining a mix of domestic Scottish league talent and experience from major European competitions.
