Scotland Boss Steve Clarke Emphasises Experienced Players Ahead Of Iceland Friendly

Scotland's head coach Steve Clarke confirms a focus on established players for the upcoming friendly against Iceland. While integrating new talent, he aims to maintain team stability as preparations for World Cup qualifiers begin.

Scotland's head coach, Steve Clarke, has made it clear that he will not be making significant changes during the upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein. Despite introducing seven new players to the squad, Clarke plans to rely on his experienced team for these matches. The World Cup qualifying campaign is set to begin in September, and Clarke is focused on maintaining stability.

Among the new faces are Hibernian forward Kieron Bowie and Sassuolo full-back Josh Doig, who have been called up for the first time. Joining them are Connor Barron, Lennon Miller, Andy Irving, Cieran Slicker, and Robby McCrorie. Clarke emphasised that while these young players are being integrated into the team, the core group remains essential for the upcoming games.

Clarke Sticks to Core Players for Iceland Match

The Scotland team will face Iceland at Hampden Park on Friday before heading to Vaduz to play against Liechtenstein three days later. Clarke stated during a pre-match press conference, "I think you know me quite well by now - we don't really experiment too much." He believes in gradually introducing young talent to help them understand the demands of international football.

The experienced players such as Andy Robertson, John McGinn, and Scott McTominay remain crucial for Scotland's strategy. McTominay recently celebrated winning the Scudetto with Napoli. Captain Robertson acknowledged the significance of integrating younger players into the squad. "Me, Scott, John, we're not going to be around forever," he noted.

Robertson further explained that it is vital for young players to grasp the challenges of international football early in their careers. He shared his own experience of growing into his role over time and expressed hope that these newcomers would eventually lead Scotland in future tournaments.

Clarke's approach balances nurturing emerging talents while relying on seasoned players for immediate results. This strategy aims to ensure a smooth transition within the team as they prepare for their World Cup qualifiers.
