Scotland's manager, Steve Clarke, took full responsibility for the team's unexpected 3-0 loss to Greece in the Nations League at Hampden Park. Greece quickly established a two-goal lead before halftime. Giannis Konstantelias scored first after 20 minutes and then assisted Konstantinos Karetsas for the second goal. Just 13 seconds into the second half, Konstantelias set up Christos Tzolis for Greece's third goal, sealing Scotland's fate as they failed to respond.
This defeat led to Scotland's relegation from League A of the Nations League. Clarke's team couldn't maintain their earlier 1-0 lead from Piraeus. Speaking to BBC Sport, Clarke acknowledged Greece's superiority, stating, "They scored with their first attack. We didn't get back behind the ball quick enough and we didn't create enough. That adds up to a disappointing night." He expressed his intention to reflect on his decisions, considering whether more rotations could have refreshed the team.

Midfielder Ryan Christie shared his manager's sentiments about the match. "We probably didn't create enough and they were pretty cut-throat going forward themselves," he said. Christie also addressed the fans' disappointment, noting how important it is to remember this feeling of letting them down so it doesn't happen again during qualifiers.
Despite this setback, Clarke remains hopeful about Scotland's future prospects. He emphasised the significance of upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein as preparation for World Cup qualifiers later in the year. "We've learned that when we do everything right, with the ball and without the ball, we're a good team at this level," Clarke stated.
The loss was unexpected given Scotland's strong home record at Hampden Park. They had only lost two out of their previous 22 competitive international matches there—against Ukraine in 2022 and Poland in 2024.
Clarke highlighted that these upcoming friendlies are crucial for building momentum ahead of World Cup qualifiers in autumn. "We've got two friendlies in June to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers in the autumn," he said.
